Overview

JSON Pick & Omit Keys — Filter JSON Fields Online

Whitelist or blacklist top-level keys in a JSON object. Pick keeps only the fields you list; Omit drops them. It is the fast way to trim payloads before sharing — strip secrets like tokens and passwords from a config, reduce a verbose API response to the three fields a ticket actually needs, or build a clean public version of an internal object. Runs privately in your browser, no copy-paste gymnastics required.

  1. Pick vs omit

Pick (whitelist) returns a new object containing only the keys you name, in the order you list them. Omit (blacklist) returns everything except the keys you name. Pick is best when you know exactly which few fields you want; Omit is best when you want most of the object minus a handful of sensitive or noisy fields.

Both operate on top-level keys. The values you keep are preserved exactly, including nested objects and arrays — only the set of root keys changes.

  2. Common uses

    • Removing passwords, tokens, or PII before pasting JSON into a ticket or chat
    • Reducing a large API response to the fields a downstream system needs
    • Building a public-safe subset of an internal configuration object
    • Standardizing payloads so two objects share the same key set before a diff
  3. Top-level vs nested selection

Pick and Omit intentionally work on root keys only, which keeps the operation predictable and fast. If you need to extract or remove a deeply nested value — say user.profile.email — use the JSON Path extractor for querying, or flatten the object first and then pick from the dotted keys.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does it support nested paths?

No — Pick and Omit work on top-level keys only. For nested fields, use the JSON Path extractor, or flatten the JSON first and pick from the dotted keys.

What if a picked key does not exist?

Missing keys are simply skipped. The output contains only the listed keys that actually exist in the input, so there are no null placeholders.

Are nested values preserved?

Yes. When you keep a top-level key, its entire value — including nested objects and arrays — is preserved unchanged.

Is it safe for sensitive data?

Yes. The tool runs entirely in your browser, so the data you are scrubbing never leaves your device. That is exactly why it is suited to removing secrets before sharing.
