Overview

JSON Base64 Encode and Decode Online

Encode UTF-8 text or JSON strings to Base64, or decode Base64 back to readable text. Useful for JWT segments, embedded payloads, API gateways, and debugging encoded fields in logs. Switch encode/decode mode in one tool — no data uploaded to any server.

  1. Encode vs decode

Encode turns plain text or JSON into a Base64 string suitable for HTTP headers, query params, or binary-safe transport. Decode reverses standard Base64 (including padding) to UTF-8 text so you can inspect payloads.

  2. JSON and Base64 in APIs

Base64 encodes arbitrary bytes using only ASCII characters, which is why APIs use it to carry JSON blobs, images, and certificates through headers, query strings, and JSON string fields that can't hold raw binary. After decoding a field, paste the result into the JSON Validator or Formatter if the content is structured JSON.

  3. Encoding is not encryption

Base64 is fully reversible with no key — anyone can decode it. It protects nothing. Never rely on Base64 to hide secrets, tokens, or personal data; it only makes bytes transport-safe. Treat a Base64 string as plainly readable as the text it came from.

  4. Standard vs URL-safe Base64

Standard Base64 uses + and / plus = padding. URL-safe Base64 (used in JWTs) swaps + and / for - and _ and often drops padding so the value survives in URLs. This tool uses standard Base64; if you're decoding a JWT segment, the JWT Decoder handles the URL-safe variant automatically.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I encode JSON to Base64?

Paste your text or JSON in encode mode and JsonDrift returns the Base64 string; switch to decode mode to reverse it back to readable text.

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Base64 is reversible encoding with no key, so it provides no security. Don't use it to protect secrets.

Is this URL-safe Base64?

This tool uses standard Base64. For the URL-safe variant, replace + and / with - and _, or use the JWT Decoder for token segments.

Can I encode binary files?

Paste or upload text and JSON. For large binary files, use a dedicated file Base64 tool.
