Overview

JSONL to JSON Array — Convert NDJSON Online

Convert JSONL (JSON Lines / NDJSON) into a single JSON array. JSONL stores one JSON object per line and is the default for log streams, LLM training data, BigQuery and Snowflake exports, and bulk APIs. Most application code, however, expects a normal array — so this tool wraps your line-delimited records into one valid [ ... ] document you can parse, format, or load anywhere. Runs privately in your browser.

  1. JSONL vs a JSON array

In JSONL, each line is an independent JSON value separated by a newline, with no commas between records and no enclosing brackets. That makes it ideal for streaming and append-only writes — you can process one line at a time without loading the whole file. A JSON array, by contrast, is a single document: items are comma-separated and wrapped in square brackets.

This converter reads each non-empty line, validates it as JSON, and assembles the records into one array in original order. The reverse tool, JSON to JSONL, splits an array back into line-delimited records for streaming systems.

  2. Where JSONL comes from

    • Machine learning datasets and LLM fine-tuning files
    • Log pipelines and append-only event streams
    • Data-warehouse exports from BigQuery, Snowflake, and Redshift
    • Bulk and batch API responses that stream records
  3. Handling messy input

Real-world JSONL often contains blank lines or a trailing newline; these are skipped automatically. If a single line is malformed, validation flags it so you can fix that record rather than guessing where a giant array broke. To check a file before converting, use the JSONL Validator.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between JSONL and NDJSON?

They are effectively the same format: one JSON value per line, newline-delimited. NDJSON (Newline Delimited JSON) and JSONL (JSON Lines) are two names for the same convention.

What happens to blank lines?

Empty and whitespace-only lines are ignored. Only non-empty lines are parsed and added to the output array.

How do I convert back to JSONL?

Use the JSON to JSONL tool, which splits a JSON array into one object per line for streaming and bulk-load systems.

Is the order preserved?

Yes. Records appear in the output array in the same order they appear in the input file.
